EARLY CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT CONTRACT LEECH & RIGDON REVOLVER.

Serial number 597. Caliber 36. This revolver was made in Greensboro, GA mid-1863. It conforms to other Leech & Rigdon Confederate Government contracted revolvers with 7.5″ round barrel, octagonal barrel housing, “LEECH & RIGDON CSA” rolled dies on top barrel flat, inspector “N” stamped on both sides of trigger guard, slotted hammer, safety pins and no cap release channel. Serial range for CS contract runs from about 500 to 1500 (end of production.

This revolver was part of pioneer Confederate revolver collector and Leech & Rigdon scholar Dr. Ted Meredith’s collection from 1980 till his estate sold in 2002. He pictures and mentions it by serial number in 1995 American Society of Arms Collector’s bulletin #72 along with all his Leech & Rigdon revolvers that he specialized in. The revolver passed to Dr. Zack Catterton till his collection was dispersed.

CONDITION: Very good overall, all matching. Serial numbers are found on barrel, arbor, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, loading arm, loading arm catch, wedge, cylinder and penciled inside grips. Maker’s mark is especially crisp and discernible. Metal is grey/plum, smooth overall with traces of finish in protected areas and scattered areas of staining and pitting. Grips are sound and well fit with light edge wear, hand worn patina. Good mechanics, clean, crisp bore with light pitting. 

Dr. Meredith had his Boca Raton neighbor, Jay Huber - a master antique gunsmith restore 2 missing/broken screws and the loading lever catch as he had Jay conserve all his guns. Otherwise, revolver is 100% original and a superior example of the “Confederate round barrel Colt navy revolver.”
