Ricasso is stamped on both sides “S.C. BUNTING JR.” in arch above “PHILA”. Samuel Bunting Jr. advertises in 1862 as a sword mfg. though according to Don Thillman’s excellent text on cavalry & artillery sabers. Bunting only assembled or retailed swords. A majority of the known Bunting swords are enlisted and only 2 known cavalry models, both pictured and described in Thillman’s text.

This example makes the 3rd and is in excellent condition, exhibiting unique gilt and engraved hilt with a cannon filling edge of guard. Scabbard is brass mounted with relief cast oak leaf design on sword rings and drag.

Fine overall condition. Blade retains much of its original polish and luster with patina staining. Brown leather grip retains most of its original polish with few tiny scuffs, tripled brass wire wrap still retains much of its original gilding. Protective leather washer has pie cut edge. Scabbard body has iron patina with pin prick pitting. Scabbard mounts retain most of their original gilding.
