Springfield U.S. Model 1822 Musket,
Springfield, Massachusetts, c. 1824.
 
42 in., .69 caliber round barrel marked on the left side of the breech "P" in a sunken oval cartouche, eagle head, and "V" along "S.M.Co" on the left side flat for Springfield Manufacturing Company, and with "B/d" and "71" on the top, the breech plug tang marked "1824"; flat lock plate with pointed convex tail marked "SPRING/FIELD/1824" and with a spread wing eagle over "US" below the brass pan, the inside of the plate marked "M.N" and all parts and screws stamped with a variety of sub-inspector marks; walnut stock, the left side behind the side plate with an illegible inspector's mark within an oval and a second inspector's mark "JPC" within a rectangular cartouche with rounded ends over the number "3" and an oval cartouche with illegible letter within below the trigger guard; iron furniture of proper form, the butt plate marked "US," the trigger guard marked "SP" on the forward extension and "J" inside the bow, the side plate marked "S," and the center band marked "U"; with sling swivels and steel rammer with button head and threaded end. 
Overall lg. 57 3/4 in.
 
Note wood loss at heel of lock. Appears to be original flint.
